PepsiCo India-Euromonitor Study Reveals Nutrition Knowledge Gap Among Kolkata Consumers…

Kolkata, October 6, 2026: A new study by PepsiCo India, in collaboration with Euromonitor International and the Indian Institute of Millet Research (IIMR), has revealed significant gaps between nutrition awareness and actual dietary habits among consumers in Kolkata, particularly when it comes to fibre intake.According to the findings, 90% of respondents in Kolkata are misinformed about their daily fibre requirements, while 61% consume less fibre than recommended. In addition, 72% of respondents said they struggle to find convenient and credible fibre-focused food options that fit into their daily routines. The findings are part of The State of Protein & Fibre in Urban India, a study spanning 1,250 respondents aged 18-50 across Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Kochi. The research also highlighted challenges related to protein consumption in Kolkata. While 71% of respondents reported being aware of protein, 59% were unable to correctly identify their daily requirements, and 67% consumed less than 41 grams of protein per day.Commenting on the findings, Dr. Ankita Marwaha, Director R&D Life Sciences and India R&D Site Lead, PepsiCo India, said, “Awareness alone is not enough. What matters is helping people translate credible nutrition knowledge into practical everyday choices.”The study underscores a broader national trend where awareness does not necessarily translate into understanding or action. Across the cities surveyed, 89% of respondents were misinformed about fibre requirements and 61% reported consuming less than the recommended amount. Nearly seven in ten respondents also pointed to the limited availability of convenient and trustworthy fibre-rich food choices. The report was unveiled at an event supported by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), bringing together experts from nutrition, public health and industry to discuss practical ways to improve access to healthier dietary choices.Dilip Radhakrishna, Senior Consultant at Euromonitor International, added that while consumers are increasingly seeking protein- and fibre-rich foods, gaps in understanding daily nutritional requirements continue to present an opportunity for stronger nutrition education and communication.
