Eastern India’s Only Dedicated Thoracic–Vascular Team at Narayana Health Kolkata Strengthens Comprehensive Lung & Vascular Care…
Kolkata, 12 November 2025: Narayana Health Kolkata is home to Eastern India’s only dedicated Thoracic–Vascular team, offering integrated care for complex lung and vascular conditions that often require multi-speciality coordination. The collaborative model combines Thoracic, Vascular, Pulmonology, Critical Care, Respiratory Physiotherapy, and Rehabilitation services under one structured clinical pathway, ensuring continuity of care from diagnosis through recovery.

Further strengthening its comprehensive lung care ecosystem, Narayana Health Kolkata today announced the official launch of ALCATI (Advanced Lung Care and Transplant Initiative) Clinic across its Narayana RN Tagore Hospital, Mukundapur; Narayana Hospitals – Howrah and Barasat units. The ALCATI Clinic aims to provide specialised, multidisciplinary evaluation and treatment for patients with advanced lung diseases and transplant requirements. As part of the launch, consultations at the clinic will be free of cost, encouraging early detection and timely management of chronic and complex respiratory conditions.

ALCATI Clinic dates
2nd Friday of every month – Narayana Hospital, Howrah
3rd Friday of every month – Narayana RN Tagore Hospital, Mukundapur
4th Friday of every month – Narayana Hospital, Barasat
The Thoracic–Vascular team is also deeply involved in the Advanced Lung Care & Lung Transplant Initiative, supported by pulmonologists, physiotherapists, nurses, and rehabilitation specialists, making it a comprehensive, integrated lung care centre that manages the patient journey end-to-end, from evaluation and treatment to post-operative recovery and long-term respiratory rehabilitation.
This team-based approach is particularly crucial in conditions where thoracic and vascular disease processes overlap, such as lung cancer, airway stenosis, mediastinal tumours, thoracic trauma, aortic aneurysms, and vascular complications within the chest cavity. Instead of patients navigating between departments and opinions, the coordinated Thoracic–Vascular unit enables unified evaluation, surgical decision-making, and post-operative care planning.
Prof (Dr.) Amitabha Chakrabarti, Clinical Lead & Senior Consultant, Thoracic & Vascular Surgery, Narayana Health, Kolkata, said, “Many patients with thoracic and vascular conditions do not fit neatly into one speciality. When the disease involves both lung tissue and major vessels, the treatment must be planned together. Our strength lies in the fact that we evaluate, operate, monitor, and rehabilitate as one unit. This ensures safer outcomes and a smoother experience for patients and families.”
Dr. Manujesh Bandyopadhyay, Consultant – Thoracic & Vascular Surgery, Narayana Health, Kolkata, added, “In several hospitals, patients see one specialist for the chest and another for vascular involvement. This often leads to delays and confusion. Here, the approach is collaborative from day one. The focus is not just on surgery, but on preparing the patient, supporting recovery, and ensuring long-term respiratory and vascular health.”
Clinical Outcomes & Case Highlights
Across Narayana RN Tagore Hospital, Mukundapur, Narayana Hospitals – Howrah, and Barasat unit, the Thoracic–Vascular team has successfully treated several complex cases, reinforcing its leadership in advanced lung and vascular care. These include a 39-year-old patient with bullous lung disease treated through robotic bullectomy, a young woman with bilateral cervical ribs causing arterial thoracic outlet syndrome, a 24-year-old with an anterior mediastinal germ cell tumour, and a 62-year-old with early-stage lung cancer managed via robotic-assisted lobectomy at Narayana RN Tagore Hospital. The hospital’s Thoracic–Vascular team remains the only unit in Eastern India performing robotic lung cancer surgery, marking a significant milestone in minimally invasive thoracic oncology.
At the pediatric level, a 2-year-old with empyema and multiple ruptured lung abscesses underwent VATS decortication at Narayana Hospital, Howrah, recovering fully under the pERAS protocol. Similarly, at the Narayana Hospital, Barasat unit, a 22-year-old student with an infected post-traumatic chest wall hematoma and empyema underwent Uniportal VATS, achieving complete recovery and early return to normal activity.
These cases highlight the efficacy of minimally invasive thoracic techniques, multidisciplinary collaboration, and patient-centred care that define the Advanced Lung Care and Transplant Initiative (ALCATI) at Narayana Health Kolkata. They further reflect the benefit of having thoracic surgeons, vascular surgeons, pulmonologists, intensivists, nursing specialists, and rehabilitative therapists working as a single coordinated system. Narayana Health Kolkata continues to serve patients from West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Northeast India, and neighbouring countries who require advanced thoracic and vascular care.
